Skin fold Thickness
An Anthropometric measurement, techniques to measure body girths at different sizes. Allowing for quick, easy, and inexpensive estimation of body composition. Based on the principle that the amount of subcutaneous fat is proportional to total body fat. Has an SEE of around +/- 3.5%
These measurements can be taken at a 3, 5, or 7 landmarks. For instance in a 3 point site for Men measurements would be taken at the chest, halfway between the armpit and nipple. Thigh, halfway between hip and knee. Abdomen, a few centimeters to the side of the belly-button. For women the thigh remains, with the inclusion of Suprailium, or hip bone, and triceps. All of the locations would be on the dominant side of the person being measured. With a loose pinch you would measure the fat above the muscle to receive various numbers that would be added, and based on a person's age an approximate body fat % would be found. |
